📜 History

The French War Memorial was originally constructed in 1937 and officially inaugurated on 3rd April 1938. It commemorates the soldiers from French India (like Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam, and Chandernagore) who bravely fought and died for France in World War I.

The structure was renovated in 1970, and today it stands as a symbol of Franco-Indian friendship and shared military history. Behind the main structure, you’ll also find a bas-relief bronze statue marking the arrival of Joseph François Dupleix in 1742—a key figure in French colonial history.

Each year on Bastille Day (14th July), the memorial is illuminated beautifully and hosts ceremonies honoring the martyrs. This tradition adds deep cultural significance to the site.
