📜 History
The Botanical Garden in Pondicherry was established in 1826 during the French colonial era, originally designed as a test site to study how different plant species adapt to the local climate. It was intended to serve both scientific and recreational purposes.
In 1829, the garden already hosted around 800–900 plant species. But its transformation into a structured botanical collection began in 1838, when renowned French botanist S.G. Perottet took over. He introduced a wide variety of rare, medicinal, and exotic plants, creating a living herbarium and laying the foundation for today’s rich biodiversity.
Following Pondicherry’s independence and its merger with India in 1954, the garden was handed over to the Department of Agriculture, which has maintained and developed it ever since. Over time, the garden has grown into an educational hub, promoting plant conservation, botanical awareness, and eco-conscious tourism.
Today, it stands as a blend of colonial legacy, ecological diversity, and public recreation — making it one of the most serene and educational green spaces in Pondicherry.
